Watering Tips for Summer

Rachel Davis on 30-07-2024

In the summer, high temperatures can make it difficult for garden plants to absorb enough water. Without sufficient water, plants become vulnerable to diseases and pests, and they may even die. Here are some suggestions to ensure your garden plants stay well-hydrated and thrive during the warm summer months.

Create Shady Areas

While some plants thrive in full sun, extreme heat can be too much for them. Summers in the Netherlands can get quite hot, so it's important to create shaded areas for plants that need it. Place sensitive plants on the shady side of your house or a fence. Shrubs, trees, and ornamental grasses can also provide natural shade.

Water at the Right Time

It's most effective to water your garden plants early in the morning or late in the evening during summer. By watering in the morning, plants have time to absorb the water before the heat increases. Watering in the afternoon or early evening can increase the risk of diseases. Keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid watering at the hottest part of the day, as the water will evaporate quickly and the roots may dry out.
  • Watering in the early morning ensures that the water penetrates the soil and reaches the roots.
  • Watering in the evening is also an option, as the water has time to soak into the ground and reach the roots.

Hydrating Potted Plants

Potted plants have shallower roots and are therefore more susceptible to heat and drought. It is crucial to ensure they stay well-moistened.

  • Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering potted plants again.
  • Potted plants can suffer from root rot if water doesn't drain properly, so ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Choose pots with drainage holes at the bottom to allow excess water to escape. You can place a saucer under the pot to catch any excess water.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your garden plants remain healthy and robust, even during the hottest summer days.
